Clean water in Ukraine, better harvests in Malawi, female entrepreneurs in Ecuador, sustainable supply chains in Thailand: since 1999, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has been supporting business projects through develoPPP that combine economic and development policy objectives.

The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH implements the programme – with up to 150 projects annually in over 60 countries. Through a combination of awareness-raising, targeted communication and compelling storytelling, we bring the projects to the attention of the business community, politicians and the general public.

Since 2023, Kaltwasser Kommunikation has been working with GIZ and the develoPPP programme. We support the communications team in effectively sharing the programme’s many success stories, reinforcing its relevance and positioning it as a leading platform for sustainable investment in developing and emerging economies.

Our communication objective:

To strengthen and raise the profile of the develoPPP programme among potential corporate partners, policymakers and the general public in the long term.
To achieve this goal, we highlight the stories behind the projects. They tell of people who courageously seize entrepreneurial opportunities, thereby unlocking development potential and creating lasting impact. This makes clear the concrete impact the investments are having, for example through new jobs, sustainable technologies and supply chains, or improved living conditions.

Cross-platform storytelling

To convey a lasting impression of the global impact of develoPPP projects, we rely on storytelling. We simplify complex information and present the content in a way that is accessible to all and tailored to the target audience, using the most appropriate formats:

  • Tailored to specific audiences: We develop and implement communication measures and formats specifically tailored to the needs of businesses, policy-makers and the general public – in German and English, using factsheets, website content, Q&As, posters, leaflets, brochures and videos.
  • Tangible: Through vivid presentations of projects and their long-term impacts, we make develoPPP’s results tangible, thereby contributing to the programme’s long-term reputation. Successes such as climate-friendly rice cultivation in South-East Asia exemplify how innovative approaches have a direct impact on living and working conditions and create added value for entire regions.
  • People-centred: The stories and achievements of local people take centre stage. By highlighting their contributions, we foster dialogue about the impact of their work and provide evidence of the positive influence the projects have on society and the environment worldwide.

Through this combination of awareness-raising, targeted communication and powerful storytelling, we foster understanding and strengthen confidence in the impact and sustainability of the supported projects. This highlights the potential inherent in linking the private sector – and how SMEs, corporations and start-ups can not only benefit economically through partnerships, but also contribute to global sustainable development at the same time.
