Grid expansion is one of the key infrastructure projects for the energy transition. New power lines, new substations—a mammoth undertaking that raises many questions. How exactly does a site investigation work? What equipment and methods are used? What happens during mapping?
To answer these questions early on and transparently, Kaltwasser Kommunikation has created a digital information platform for Bayernwerk Netz. With two special websites on site investigations and mapping, a central point of contact has been developed that explains complex technical topics in an understandable way and builds trust among all stakeholders.
The starting point
Extensive preparatory work is necessary for the planned network expansion. This includes ground investigations to provide information about soil conditions and load-bearing capacity, as well as ecological mapping to record the occurrence of flora and fauna. These measures are indispensable for planning, but often cause uncertainty among residents.

The process
To close this gap, we have designed two project subpages specifically dedicated to the topics of building site investigations and mapping. The process can be divided into several steps:
- Concept: Design and structure of the subpages, tailored to the needs of the target group
- Content preparation: Development of easy-to-understand FAQs on the technical topics mentioned
- Image and map material: Support in the design of image material for clear explanations
Cold water QR codes integrated into the letters to the owners, which lead directly to the digital information. This marks the transition from print to digital: basic information remains in writing, while more in-depth content can be accessed online at any time.
The result
The platform facilitates access to complex topics and creates transparency in the planning process. Property owners and citizens receive simple answers to their questions, while the public gains confidence in the approach.
